About MOSA
| Who We Are Thank you for your interest in the Midwest Organic Services Association (MOSA). MOSA was formed and incorporated in March of 1999 to serve the needs of producers and processors specifically in the Midwest looking for a high quality, sensible organic certification program. MOSA now offers independent, third-party certification services to interested producers and processors throughout the United States and abroad, but we still pride ourselves on our Midwest focus. On April 29th, 2002, MOSA was among the first group of certifiers to be announced as accredited by the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP). The NOP is a culmination of a 12-year federal rule process, initiated by the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of the 1990 Farm Bill. The OFPA mandated the creation of a unified set of production standards, materials list, certification requirements and regulatory oversight, through an accreditation process, of state and private certification agencies such as MOSA. Mutual recognition between accredited certifiers and access of certified products bearing the USDA organic seal to international markets are two of the main goals of the NOP. MOSA has also obtained accreditation from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Guide 65 from the USDA, providing additional verification and marketing opportunities. ISO Guide 65 accreditation is intended to ensure that certification bodies operate third-party certification systems in a consistent and reliable manner, thereby facilitating their acceptance on a national and international basis and so furthering international trade. In 2003, MOSA also obtained accreditation with the Conseil des appellations agroalimentaires du Quebec (CAAQ), becoming recognized as certifiers of organic agricultural and food products sold on the Quebec market.
